World number one Swiatek is bidding for a third Roland Garros crown in four years and fourth Grand Slam title after her 2022 US Open win.
Reigning French Open champion Iga Swiatek will attempt to become the first woman to defend the title in Paris in 16 years when she faces surprise finalist Karolina Muchova. The Polish world no. 1 has two Roland Garros titles in three years and would look to bag a third title, after winning the 2022 US Open. Justine Henin was the last woman to win a hat trick of titles at the French Open, and Swiatek will be aiming to match her feat by defending the title.
Although she will start the favourite, she will need to be wary of Muchova, who beat Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka after being match point down in the decider in the semifinals.
One big positive for Swiatek is that she will retain her top spot in the WTA Rankings after Sabalenka’s defeat in the semis. The Polish player is the youngest woman since Monica Seles in the 1990s to reach three finals at Roland Garros.
“Rafa, what he did and what he’s still doing, it’s pretty amazing,” said Swiatek, who looks up to the clay court legend as her idol. “I never kind of knew that it’s gonna be possible for me.”
Surprisingly, Muchova leads 1-0 in the head-to-head between her and Swiatek, having beaten the Pole in the first round of the 2019 Prague Open.
